After rather positive reactions and reviews about his previous SPACE GEMS and OUTERSPACE GEMS-CDs filled with 'vintage songs', COSMIC HOFFMANN decided to publish again some interesting electronic 'treasures' of the years 1977 — 1983 from his musical archive. HYPERNOVA offers (with his own musical handwriting) unreleased electronic music with hypnotic sequences, a lot of unusual Mellotronsounds and very spacey pads, partly inspired by Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and NEU.

Born in 1951, Klaus COSMIC HOFFMANN-Hoock is a musician who experienced the world of music at first hand. From the early days of the Beatmania, through the mid-60s' Psychedelia and the wild era of Germany's '70s electronic Krautrock till today, he has always tried to find his own musical way of expressing his thoughts and feelings with no interest in fashion or hype. Traces of unreleased song material of his archive could be found scattered over his previous COSMIC HOFFMANN-CDs. After his 'Space Gems' and 'Outerspace Gems'-CDs Klaus opens again his 'magic box' of handmade spacey gems from the period 1977-1983 for this compilation of original electronic music. Enjoy!

This is your Cosmic Captain speaking. Welcome to another vintage trip through the vast infinite space filled with galaxies, spiral nebulas and stars. The accompanying third musical edition of spacey gems stem again from those days before the computers took over the reign on Planet Earth. All songs were spontaneously played and recorded on cassettes or tapes then. The electronic equipment was rather basic with a Mini Moog and a Mellotron plus some tape-driven echo devices at the heart of my spacecraft. Yes, it was still the dawning of the 'analogue' pre-MIDI era where every take was an adventurous discovery full of emotions. Thanks for flying COSMIC AIRLINES and I hope you enjoy your flight through space and time.

"Hypernova" offers another bunch of restored tracks from the old days, coming from the music archives of Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock.

The nine pieces (partly inspired by Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and NEU) on this third instalment of vintage rarities of the 70s & 80s feature the usual analogue suspects (Mellotron, Mini Moog, Roland M 100, tape-driven echo devices) as heard on the previous two volumes, all played spontaneously.

I especially like the atmospheric, free form pieces here, such as the emotional "Requiem for a dying Star" with very nicely rendered Mellotron textures or the cinematic "Alienapolis" with its dark, psychedelic edges.

It seems the sound of retro music is here to stay, so all those who care for another healthy dose of vintage electronics with a space theme: this one's for you.

Der deutsche Elektronikmusiker und Gitarrist Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock hat ein drittes Mal sein Archiv geöffnet und ältere Stücke, die er unter dem Namen Cosmic Hoffmann präsentiert, auf dem Album "Hypernova" zusammengetragen. Während Klaus seine asiatische Ader in dem Projekt Mind Over Matter auslebt, nutzt er den Namen Cosmic Hoffmann für die sphärische, an der "Berliner Schule" ausgerichtete Elektronikmusik. Da finden viele warme Elektroniksounds, die mit Moog oder Mellotron erstellt wurden, seinen Weg durch die heimischen Boxen.

Die bei seinem eigenen Label herausgebrachte CDR trägt den Untertitel "Vintage Rarities Of The 70s And 80s Vol. 3" und ist die Fortsetzung der beiden Alben "Space Gems" und "Outerspace Gems". In den recht spärlichen Infos auf dem Cover meldet sich der Cosmic Captain, in dem er einige Worte an den Hörer richtet. So erfährt man, dass alle Tracks spontan entstanden bzw. gespielt und ursprünglich auf Kassette oder Tonband aufgenommen worden sind. Benutzt hat Klaus dabei vornehmlich analoge Geräte. Machen wir uns also auf, auf eine Reise durch Raum und Zeit in die 70'er und 80'er.

Neun Stücke präsentiert Klaus auf der CD-R, deren Laufzeiten bei 4:50 bis 13:01 Minuten liegen. Mit dem längsten Stück startet die CD in den Hoffmann-Kosmos. "Longing For The Space" heißt es und präsentiert einen hypnotischen Trip durchs All. Ich sehe direkt die psychedelischen Farbwolken, die in den 70'ern bei Livekonzerten benutzt wurden, vor meinem geistigen Auge auftauchen. Ich selbst bezeichne Musik als Droge ohne Nebenwirkungen und bei diesem Stück hebe ich bereits ab in die nebulöse Welt meiner Gedanken. Tolles Stück, das sich langsam aufbaut und mit fortlaufender Dauer immer intensiver auf mich wirkt.

Als nächstes kommt "Requiem For A Dying Star". Die Mellotronklänge, die Klaus da nutzt, bieten den Soundtrack für einen Weltraumtrip. Der Titel ist gut gewählt, denn bei mir stellt sich ein Gefühl ein, als beobachte ich aus der Ferne einen Planeten, wie er langsam zerfällt. Das Stück hat einen sehr theatralischen Aufbau, der diesen Effekt noch unterstützt. "Cosmic Garden" ist da aus ganz anderem Holz geschnitzt. Dieser Track ist ein "grüner" Track, so will ich es mal bezeichnen, denn er strahlt eine gewisse "Natürlichkeit" aus. Ich hab das Gefühl mich im Freien durch eine unangetastete Flora zu bewegen. Sehr gut gefällt mir die E-Gitarre, die ab der Mitte des Stückes ins Spiel kommt.

"Alienapolis", ein sehr schönes Wortspiel für eine außerirdische Stadt, ist recht futuristisch mit sphärischen Sounds, die in unterschiedlichen Klangmustern und Stimmlagen aus den Boxen rauschen. Dadurch wird der Eindruck erweckt, man würde auf eine Stadt eines weit entfernten Planeten herabblicken. "Hypnotic" ist in der Tat hypnotisch, denn der Beat und die gespielte Melodie rauben einem die Sinne. Das Ganze ist zwar recht monoton angelegt, man kommt aus der musikalischen Umklammerung aber kaum heraus.

In "Drifting In Time" werden flirrende Synthieflächen vor dem Hörer ausgebreitet, "Spiral Nebula" klingt recht "Berliner Schule"-mäßig, mit einer Art Rumbarhythmus im Hintergrund, es hat aber doch immer noch einen sehr sphärischen Anstrich. Es folgt der Hasardeur-Ritt in "Star Riders", ein Stück mit einem treibenden Rhythmus. Und mit "Mercury" geht es dann als Abschluss der CD wieder sehr sphärisch weiter durchs All.

Auch die dritte Runde der Ausgrabungsarbeit aus dem unendlich scheinenden Fundus von Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock hat sich wieder gelohnt. Klaus hat wieder einige Schätze für Freunde der analogen Elektronikinstrumente veröffentlicht, die nicht in der hintersten Ecke hätten verrotten dürfen. Wer die beiden Vorgängeralben mochte oder spacige Elektronikmusik im Umfeld der "Berliner Schule" mag, für den ist das Album "Hypernova" genau das richtige. Auf dass noch einige Teile dieser Serie kommen mögen.

Aller guten Dinge sind Drei -- das wird sich auch unser "kosmischer Klaus" gesagt haben. Denn mit "Hypernova" liegt bereits No .3 der Vintage Rarities vor. Begonnen hat Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock mit den "Space Gems" über die "Outerspace Gems" bis hin jetzt zur "Hypernova". Mit diesen drei Perlen der mitunter fast 40 Jahre alten Sphärenklänge müssen die geneigten ZuhörerInnen ja in endlose Weiten entschweben. Bei Flügen durch Galaxien, vorbei an Spiralnebeln und Sternen verliert man das Gefühl für Raum und Zeit -- und genau das beabsichtigt der "ganz schwer Kosmische" wohl auch mit seiner Musik. Ja, ja, die guten alten Analog-Sounds! Sie stammen wohl aus der "Steinzeit", als noch kein Gedanke an Computer verschwendet wurde. Sie klingen immer noch herrlich psychedelisch und keineswegs verstaubt! Cosmic Hoffmann ist ja ein Meister seines Faches! Er zupft seine unverkennbare kosmische Gitarre so, wie nur er es kann. Außerdem beherrscht er das Mellotron wie kein Zweiter. Nicht umsonst nennt man ihn in Fachkreisen ja auch Mr. Mellotron himself ...

Und dieser Hexenmeister der Spacemusic hat für sein neues Album "Hypernova" genau die analogen Perlen herausgefischt, die Herzen von "Alt-68ern" und Überbleibseln der Flower-Power-Generation höher schlagen lassen. Ein Schatz für Fans von schwebenden Klängen. Eine Platte, mit der man abfliegt und Zeit und Raum vergisst! "Hypernova" sticht wohlig aus der Vielzahl von manch kalten, leblosen Computersounds hervor. Die Musik ist wie eine Zeitmaschine -- man fühlt sich 30 bis 40 Jahre in die Vergangenheit versetzt.

Here is the 3rd shutter of an archive collection from the Mind over Matter mentor. Constituted by nine tracks, HYPERNOVA is a musical journey divided between cosmic ambient and slow rhythms to hypnotic tendency.

Sequenced pulsations, accompanied with a whistling synth, open the cosmic LOOKING FOR SPACE. A fine rhythm on a synth to soloist's arpeggios waves in the misty spheres of a musical galaxy with a hypnotic effect. A little as an eternal lascivious dance which feeds the insomnia, LOOKING FOR SPACE flows with a sweetness pace on a synth stuffed with magnificent solos, encircled by a dense and sinuous Mellotron which feeds the cosmos of analog sound effects. REQUIEM FOR A DYING STAR is a slow agony where the Mellotron floods the stars with slow captivating stratums. A slow, almost atonal cosmic title as the heavy ALIENAPOLIS dips us into the heavy atmospheres of a galactic suspense. COSMIC GARDEN is slightly more rhythmic. A smooth rhythm with light guitar riffs spins in loops, dropping some good solos. HYPNOTIC is animated by tabla percussions which organize a tribal dance pace very hypnotically. Its Mellotron is delicious and charms with fluty spirit. FLOATING IN TIME hems on felted percussions and a heavy Mellotron line which forge a strange rhythm without percussions or rhythmic sequencers. An immense sound prism where the synth escapes brief solos in acuities tones which derive in a cosmos drawn by a Mellotron to captivating waves, a beautiful title which reflects the psychedelic electronic years. Quite as SPIRAL NEBULA and its guitar/synth fusion on cosmic tribal percussions as well as its heavy Mellotronned coat which prowls in a cosmos to shooting stars.

STAR RIDERS is the most boiling title on HYPERNOVA: a circular heavy rhythm which swirls as a gyrating gallop, encircled by a Mellotron to spectral waves which could be also the wings of a nameless rider. The tempo rises and comes down restlessly in a sound spiral to multiple synthesized serpentines which roar such of witches on a Mellotron to imperturbable waves. Space cosmic rock which gallops with ardor in a sound sphere peppered with brightly colored tones, an excellent title. MERCURY ends this collection of COSMIC HOFFMANN in a twinkling sea of prism which guides us towards a slightly symphonic synth to austere chords. The cloudiness is becoming enamoured with a sentimental intro, to plunge us into a musical constancy which swirls such a sound cyclone. A funeral march follows which concludes this album in a floating, heavenly and eternal atmosphere.

Once again, Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock makes us the blow of the seduction in a sound universe where some would fail. This collection of archives demonstrates the influence that this too much underestimated artist had on EM, both sequenced and spiritual (quite as this collection moreover), as well as the progressive music.

Als Fan von "alter" EM bin ich bisher restlos von HYPERNOVA begeistert. Einfach schön. Das Mmmmmhellotron ist nur gut, leider wissen das einige heutzutage nicht mehr zu schätzen, auch die Älteren!
